It is the year 2045, and the whole Earth has basically gone to crop. There is a severe energy crisis and oil crash going on worldwide. Wade Owen Watts lives in the Portland Avenue stacks, just west of Oklahoma City's stacks. Stacks are 20 + R.V.s piled on top of each other, with each one reinforced, not very strongly, with modular scaffolds. These often collapsed under their own weight, and killed all the people inside. They were made by the government to maximize ground space because after the collapse of oil and energy, large cities were flooded with refugees from surrounding rural and suburban areas causing a massive urban housing shortage and making real estate close to the city invaluable. To fix this problem, someone came up with the idea to stack R.V.s up to save space. Gunfire was common in the stacks, and people were willing to kill for food or good OASIS consoles. Nearly everyone wanted food, water, electricity, and a reliable connection to OASIS. Everyone's last hope to survive was to win Halliday's multibillion dollar fortune, which is why at first nearly everyone stopped what they were doing and went looking for the easter egg. Everyone goes to OASIS as an escape from the real world problems because there they can get jobs, go to school, play games, almost anything. If people were tired of the real world, they could just plug into OASIS and leave.
